we want to be again expecting.

First I would like to like to Congratulate Melissa on running and completing her first 5 km marathon on the dark, cold, and snow covered streets of the city on New Year’s Eve. I had no doubt that you would do it well. You are not one to give up on your dream, you truly inspire me. Always believe. Love you Mom
I sat in the kitchen staring out the window long enough,
while watching the snow blanket the frozen ground I was just itching to get out
there. There was only one thing holding me back; I was not sure I could
snowshoe. Two winters ago I received these wonderful snowshoes from my friend
Derrick and I put lots of kilometers on them, it was a great winter. Towards
the end of that winter I had a little accident, I tripped over a branch buried
in the snow and twisted my knee. I did not snowshoe after that day and rested
my knee as best I could for the rest of that winter hoping I would be able to
get back to snowshoeing the next winter. That was a problem, last year we did
not have a winter. There was never enough snow and I never even pulled them on
once. The good thing about that was my knee healed very well even with all the
hiking I did. Snowshoeing and hiking use totally different muscles and joints it
appears.
This brings me to this snowy stormy day, I had to try. I
went downstairs and put layers on and pulled the snowshoes off of the shelf they were stored on, no waxing nor dusting, just go out in the snow slip my
snowmobile boots into the straps and off I went. This was easy it is just like
riding a bike, you never forget, I guess.
I made my way down the laneway hoping
to get to the bush and see all the trees covered with snow and ice, I was
getting rather excited. The wind was whipping little pellets of what appears to
be frozen rain against my face, not so easy now; I should have thought this
through a little more. I pulled my turtleneck up over my chin and cheeks and
trudged on. My legs were starting to feel a little jittery and I chalked it up
to the handful of jellybeans I ate before exiting the house, maybe I should
have had a power bar instead, those jelly beans sure were good though. I kept
going.
I made it to the pump house and that is when I realized I
was not going to make it to the bush and see all those beautiful trees covered
with snow or all those Deer tracks or my snow-covered rock. I was not so sure I
could even make it back to the house now. I could see my big window from here; the
wind was whipping up the snow so much I thought it was my window that I was
seeing. I wondered what I was thinking going out into a snow storm with biting
cold winds, cutting into my face and my bare hands that I was silly enough not
to cover with my gloves. I truly thought they were in my pocket. I had my
camera, my bear bell, my phone but no gloves, I knew now I had to head back to
the house. I would chalk this up to a trial run and try again tomorrow. Yes
tomorrow was to be sunny and warmer and there would be a lot more snow, yes I
am going to do this tomorrow for sure.
I stopped and rested for a minute and took some shots of the
pump house and my snowshoes near the fence since I was there anyways. This is
when I looked over towards the East, I could see snowdrifts against the line
fence and I decided since I came all this way I had to make my way to that line
fence and get some photos of the drifts before they were gone.
Since My Hero
builds extremely good fences and I cannot squeeze through them I have to go
over. Rail fences are a little tricky so I took my time and I climbed up two
rails with the snowshoes on, I have my toes tucked under the third rail and
decided to roll over from there. I swung my body up and rested it on the top
rail my snowshoes in the air; I hurled or rolled my body over the top. I landed
on the ground with a thud. I was glad I had tucked my camera back into my
pocket; I am really going to have to practice my technique before hopping
anymore fences. I pulled myself up and brushed the snow off my coat and pants.
I stood there for a moment hoping not to feel any twinges of pain, oh that was
lucky. I head to those drifts. One step at a time, with the wind and freezing rain
bouncing off my jacket; this was so worth it those drifts were so beautiful
like little waves in the ocean.
I walked the fence line around the
perimeter of the field and back to an open gate. I truly did not want to tackle
another fence jump. I stopped and took photos of random thistles and leaves
along the way, the wind was still whipping the snow and ice against my face but
I was having fun.
Finally I dragged my tired legs through the gate and into
the barn yard; I unhooked the gate, walked through then hooked it behind me and
headed into the basement. “Where have you been?” My Hero calls down. I answer, In the
field with my snowshoes. “How was it?” Well; I will let you know tomorrow. I am tired and
I need a nap. Once around the field is apparently all I could do; I was so glad
I did not make it to the bush, I would have had to call My Hero to come and get
me.
After all that effort I, in the end, did not get any usable photos of those drifts, it is very hard to get good shots in a snowstorm.
Tomorrow will be better when I make it to the bush and get among those snow
covered trees.

I'm glad you made it back safely to your warm house and your Hero.! Can I come with you the next time? I'd love to snow shoe!
That's a nice pair of bush shoes you've got there...much easier to walk in than the old 'fat daddies'.
These pictures are beautiful! I could feel the snow upon my face. So relieved you made it home safely.
I am the opposite to you, when it snows I stay in..........not a fan of this cold weather.

My boys are so jealous - they are wishing for snow.
Congrats to Melissa!!
Well that was a fun little adventure. Be safe B!
and i know you will prepare this next time. :)
We're getting just enough snow to be a pain..and bitter cold temps. 12 right now.
I think I'd love to have a pair of snowshoes...but I'd gimp my knee for sure. My left one doesn't work right anyway and hurts all the time. An encounter that included a lawn mower, a Jack Russell Terrorist and the hole she dug.
Coming from a cold country myself, I'm amazed you did all that without gloves!! Sounds like you didn't have a scarf on either. Please don't leave home without these things when you go to the bush.
Hey, at least you got out there and made an effort. I'm impressed that you climbed over the rail fence. Congrats to your daughter for completing her first 5k! That's a major accomplishment. Way to go Melissa!!!
i never brought mine out last year either. it was a good year for rubbers (as my grandpa used to call them.) your pump house shot is beautiful! stay warm!
How lovely.
I've never snowshowed, although I hear it's a wonderful way to make winter your friend.

1# Yay Melissa! That is great, both physically and mentally - theres a good reason why they call them marathons ! congrats!
2# the wisest in the woods are the ones who know when to turn back - pity the person who doesnt believe that nature will always have the last laugh...you be wise!
3# rail fence + snowshoes + fluffy snow = mentality of a nine year old boy ; you and i have a hecka lot in common...LOL
4# one day of snowshoeing =equals= some netflix and downtime with your hero today :D!!
B! What were you thinking...no gloves! You are one tough cookie and I'm so glad you made it home.
Wow woman, you are brave! I won't even fill the bird feeders in this weather! Looking forward to the photos when you get them!
Yay for your daughter! What a great accomplishment.
Looking forward to seeing more wintery images, but please don't forget your gloves next time! :)
oh, you scared a squirrel. the photos are awesome and your adventure makes me proud of you. congratulations to your daughter, sweetie :) she must be as determined as you. hope you have a great 2013, and that the weather helps you keep all your cows this year. xxo
Well. at least you have had one snowshoe adventure this year, which is better than last year! You were brave to climb that fence even though you had forgotten your gloves!
Happy New Year Buttons! I have never snow shoed but I sure felt like I was out there with you. Be careful going over the fences.
My kind of adventure . I love walking in the snow even if it is a bit stormy . I haven't tryed snowshoes yet as we haven't had lots of snow the past few years at least not enough that I cant walk in it ! Lovely photos . Hope your adventure is another good one tomorrow ! Glad you made it back safe and pain free ! Always a plus that is !
Your 'bush' shoes are really neat. They look nice and warm!
Sounds like a fun adventure! I've never tried snow shoes but I could have used them last week. Love the photos and story as always :) Glad you still carry the bear bell.
Congrats to Melissa on the 5K. I'd love to snowshoe!!
Congratulations getting started on the shoes again! TAKE YOUR TIME and build up your stamina. I had a fall similar to yours this year which resulted in a back injury. I was devastated as playing in the snow is very important to me. We've done a couple of short, easy trips since I took a few days off, so here's hoping I can keep it up. Take it easy!
You are braver than I am, that is for sure!!! I told the dogs it was too cold for them to go out, after I got home from the chiro today, and that is that. I have not made it to the firled since the snow started.
Congrats to your daughter, what an awesome accomplishment!
Now to you, make sure you have your gloves next time young lady and you be careful going over those fences!
Today prepared you for tomorrow, I can't wait to see the pictures....I know they will be amazing!
WOW! What amazing photos. Sound like a fun adventures. Just like riding a bike. :)
Hugs~
I've always loved to walk in the snow. We get little here, but just enough it isn't a bother. This year is looking like a snowy one.
Happy New Year to you Buttons!
B-I'm so proud of you for getting out there, and the next time it will be a little easier, too!
Last Christmas my husband gave me a pair of "Yak Tracks" They are these devices that you put on boots and they help give traction while walking on ice. I love them! One of my favorite winter activities is taking long walks on frosty nights and now I can do so without fear of falling.
Happy New Year, my friend!
I am so jealous. I would love to have a pair of these. Proud of you for going for it. I bet you are feeling it today?
Beautiful photos! We have only had an inch of snow this year, I wish we had more :)
That was quite the adventure, Buttons! But I am going to scold you! Do not go out in a show storm alone again, unless you tell your hero where you are going and how long you will be! I live in the wilderness and it is so important to be safe and not get stranded in the snow! Ok. I am done scolding. You need bear spray and dogs, too. Ok, I am really scolding you now! Stay safe, stay warm and remember, no photo is worth your safety! xx
Glad you didn't get hurt in the fly-over. I would love to try snowshoes once, just to say I did it!
Congratulations to Melissa, well done!
As for you my dear friend - pleased you arrived home safely, but do be careful..hugs M xoxoxox
Burrr you made me feel so cold. Hope your body feels ok today. You should see my snow shoes I have the old fashion ones. 1 pair of bear paws and a pair of long tapered pointed ones for breaking trail. Haven't used them this year as we only have about a foot of snow. But last winter we had almost 3 feet and we could go all over the place as everything was covered.
I just hate when I get all my winter gear on and get away from the house to only realize I forgot something. Gurrr. Well I am glad you pushed yourself a bit and got over the snowshoe hurdle. Love your snowy scenes. Hope there was no calving during the snow storm. Wishing you many sunny snowy days.
That wore me out just reading it. I cannot imagine doing anything in that sort of weather. We have a heat wave at the moment
